Graph Traversal is an essential component in understanding and using graph theory, widely employed in AI and ML. A graph represents objects and their relationships in terms of nodes (vertices) and edges (connections). Traversal is the process of visiting every vertex once in a systematic way. It is fundamental to many AI algorithms, ranging from search algorithms to network flow.

There are key techniques used in graph traversal: Breadth-First Search (DFS) and Depth-First Search (BFS).

BFS examines all the vertices or nodes in a graph ‘widely’ before moving ‘deeply’. Meaning, it starts at the root (arbitrary node), visits the neighboring nodes first, and then goes to the next level neighbors. This process continues until all nodes are discovered.

DFS does the opposite: it goes deep into a graph by examining child nodes before sibling nodes. After visiting a child node, it goes down the path until it reaches a leaf node, then backtracks and repeats the process until the entire graph has been traversed.

Besides DFS and BFS, there exist specialized graph traversal methods such as Topological sorting, used for directed acyclic graphs, and Bellman-Ford or Dijkstra’s algorithm used in weighted graphs for finding the shortest path.
