But, if you kept guessing, filled the jar, and repeated this process hundreds of times, you’d get a good idea of the average amount. That’s very similar to what Monte Carlo does: it makes lots of guesses to understand the probable outcomes.

A key aspect of Monte Carlo methods is the use of randomness. Each simulation or trial used to make a prediction or approximation is made using randomly generated numbers. This approach makes Monte Carlo highly suitable for problems where deterministic solutions are challenging due to high complexity or uncertainty in the problem’s parameters.
The fundamental assumption of Monte Carlo methods is that given a large number of trials, the results of these trials will converge towards the expected result. This is based on the law of large numbers, a principle in probability theory that describes the long-term stability of the mean of a random sample from a distribution.
A classic example of Monte Carlo used in AI and machine learning is the Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) algorithm. MCTS is a decision-making tool, perfect for games where every action can trigger a vast number of consequences. Think of Chess and Go, where each move opens up a vast “tree” of possible subsequent moves. MCTS uses Monte Carlo’s simulation power to roughly estimate the promising moves and iteratively refine its evaluations as it gathers more information with more simulations.
Monte Carlo isn’t perfect. It often requires many random samples, which can be computationally expensive. Plus, the approach may not be accurate for small numbers of trials, and in higher dimensional spaces, the algorithm might struggle due to the “curse of dimensionality” where the amount of data needed increases exponentially with the dimension number.
